*This is a repost from Aug 8th that had been lost due to a website update. This repost also serves as a response to Apple looks to take tablet beyond bathroom Web browsing

My, how selfish we have all become. Most rumor mills on the ‘net are discussing how the new Tablet (iTablet, etc) will allow iTunes to add more content to music albums or permit students to purchase single chapters from textbooks, saving them millions of dollars a year. While such ideas are good, the true purpose of the Apple Tablet transcends the current Apple base. And since when does an Apple product focus on keeping more money in users’ pockets?

When Apple introduces a new product, you can be assured that millions of dollars in R and D has been spent in determining how the new product will assist Apple in acquiring additional revenue and market share. The iPod initially targeted a younger consumer audience, the iPhone, twenty- to thirty-year-olds. Apple has yet to introduce a solid user-focused product for the business community, but the Apple Tablet will change that quickly.

Consider just two scenarios where such an “iTablet” could improve QA and workflow

* As a mobile hand-held device, the Tablet Could be used to transmit information to and from production managers on a manufacturing floor via an Apple Server. This data can then be compiled, analyzed and distributed to managers using “iTablets” or iPhones who may provide instant feedback back to the production manager. (An aside: Google Wave)
* Or, as a touch-screen auto-collision estimator used by insurance adjusters utilizing a Tablet to allow for more efficient claims handling and a strong ROI for insurance companies. Instead of using a cumbersome Windows-based Excel-styled program, a rugged protective screen and full-body case would permit the Tablet to be taken on the road. A Bluetooth-enabled camera (or perhaps an integrated 5MP camera with flash and optical zoom) along with a microphone to record witnesses’ accounts about an accident would reduce the time necessary for claims processing, saving the insurance money over time while further establishing Apple in the corporate marketplace. Plus, with the potential of utilizing Verizon’s network, estimates could be sent to HQ and repair shops instantly.

Such a tablet would present Apple with massive potential for adoption, a great foundation for expanding application sales and a strong reason for business, especially small- to medium-sized businesses, to take a second look to Apple for technology solutions.
